he beauty industry has long had a love affair with silver. When used in skincare, colloidal silver is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. However, when it comes to makeup, silver is often relegated to the festive season only. Cool-toned metallics can be tricky, but there is a whimsical freshness that silver brings, particularly in spring.

Pewter, silver’s luminous cousin, is darker and often more wearable, but still brings a flash of intensity to the eye. Finishes and textures range from the subtle soupcon of an eyeliner flick to playful glitter dabbed onto lids. In an age of intricate cut-creases and bountiful blending, silver serves as a reminder to have fun.

With Emma Corrin’s Golden Globes makeup look, an ode to Pierrot the clown with flashes of silver, and Pat McGrath creating a strong case for metallics in Prada’s AW21 show, perhaps this time in which we’re all searching for silver linings is also the time to reignite an argent affair with our beauty looks.
